I left Melbourne at 6 am July 11th in the pitch black before dawn.
By the time I had gotten to 95 with my ski and my friends ski in
tow I had asked myself, oh several dozen times at least,
WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING? The prospect of driving
over a thousand miles towing two jetskis and being away from
home for a week or two suddenly didn't seem so appealing. But
the farther I got up the road my attitude continued to brighten along
with the sun as it rose in the east. I kept a journal each day of my
travels and the first day I made it to Richmond. Thursday I toured
Jamestown Settlement. On Friday I met up with my friend
and fellow clubber from NJ, Dennis Bucher in Woodbridge along
with a whole lot of folks from PWC nation to prepare for Saturday's
DC FREEDOM RALLY. We met a lot of great people and many
knew fellow clubbers from other PWC events and or have read
about us online and in magazines. Pretty cool. We felt like mini
celebrities. The ride into DC was great and I felt like a wide eyed
little kid riding past and seeing all of the monuments along the
Potomac River. We created quite a scene. Imagine 143 jetskis
lead by fireboats spouting water from their hoses and over 160 riders
traveling 32 miles up to DC and 32 miles back. It was quite incredible
to be a part of all of that. We returned and were greeted by a spread
of pulled pork, baked beans, corn on the cob and chocolate brownies.
And we even got dry bags and a really cool FREEDOM RALLY t
shirt with George Washington on a jetski! All for $20. Chris Manthos
and his AWA crew threw together quite an experience for everyone
involved. And I believe we made an important statement about our
PWC right to ride. Chris and crew deserve a great big thank you from
everyone in this country that owns and operates PWC. They work
continuously to protect our right to ride anywhere boats are allowed.
My trip continued northward and though I think it was facinating I won't
bore you with all of the details. In a nutshell though I will tell you
that
I put over 2400 miles on my truck and over 350 GPS miles on my
trusty YAMAHA FX HIGH OUTPUT. I rode in 5 states, on 8 rivers
2 ocean inlets, rode the Atlantic ocean between Atlantic City and Ocean
City, the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, the Chesapeake Bay and
countless twisty creeks and streams. And nearly got caught in a nasty
fog bank that rolled in off the ocean in Atlantic City. As I headed south
July 22nd after nearly two weeks away I kept saying WOW!!!
WHAT A BLAST!!! as I left the northeast in my rearview mirror
with an attitude quite different than the one I started with on that dark
morning July 11th.
